Morning Ritual

This is how showers look in Bulgaria and Turkey ... they are like wet rooms ... everything is tiled and there is no shower door etc ... they are small spaces.

I love a hot shower! I have never been a bath person really ... I come out feel shrivelled, wrinkled and tired ... but a shower I find energising and invigorating. I have had a morning ritual for years now that is all around my early morning shower. I am particular about the shower gel I use ... it is all about the smell for me ... my personal shampoo ... and I buy my scrubber that I use from Body Shop, I think the material is better than what I can buy from the supermarket and they last longer and are bigger. I don't know what they are called, but my family know what I mean. Even the shower curtain is important to my experience ... the right colour and design is essential! I think bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in a house.

I really look forward to this ritual and I hate being rushed so I allow myself plenty of time. Sometimes I just stand in the shower with my head against the wall and enjoy the hot water running over me. If I am tired I stand there with my eyes closed and drift of to some other place. I find my showers a great place to plan my day, work out my issues, reflect on my mistakes, what to do next and so it goes. I guess I use it as a real refuge and therapy and is probably the most important part of my day.

I can get really angry when I get in the shower and there is no hot water ... ask our children! I have been known to come out of our bathroom yelling because all the hot water is gone.  I was always pretty tough on our children when they showered ... no longer than 5 minutes. I used the excuse of our power bill, but really it was about me ... I did not want them using all the hot water and leaving me with none!

Since travelling through Bulgaria and Turkey that has all changed! I don't shower ... I hose myself down ... often there is not enough room to shower because the space can be quite small. A lot of the time there is no hot water ... more luke-warm or colder, who wants to stand under a shower that is not running hot water. Solar heating for hot water is very big in this part of the world and I am guessing that in the mornings the solar panels have not had enough sun on them to heat the water and a lot of hot water may been used in the evenings. I use soap now instead of gel ... I do try to be a little discerning with that ... commercial shampoo and no scrubber ... some days I don't shower at all because there is no hot water, so a quick scrub and of we go ... I am ok with all of that. But today I really missed my shower ritual!

Solar Panels and hot water tank ...
